Metering skids are pre-assembled packages that measure gas or liquid flow rates, providing custody transfer measurement, process monitoring, or allocation metering. These compact systems integrate flow meters, instrumentation, controls, and supporting equipment on structural frames for factory assembly and testing.

Skid components typically include flow measurement devices (turbine meters, ultrasonic meters, Coriolis meters), flow conditioning equipment, pressure and temperature instrumentation, flow computers for data processing, sampling systems, and pressure regulation if required. Design depends on fluid characteristics, accuracy requirements, and application.

Custody transfer metering—where product ownership changes—requires highest accuracy and compliance with standards like API MPMS or AGA reports. Process metering may accept lower accuracy but require rangeability for varying flows. Each application determines appropriate metering technology and skid configuration.

Skid-mounting offers advantages: factory fabrication in controlled conditions, complete testing before shipment, simplified field installation with minimal piping and wiring, reduced installation time and cost, and easier relocation if requirements change. Skids arrive ready for connection and commissioning.
