Helium Purification Plants: Turnkey or Leased Options From Crude Helium to 5N Purity

A helium purification plant takes a crude helium stream and removes nitrogen, hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and moisture until the gas reaches saleable, merchant-grade purity. Wikota Design & Construction delivers these plants two ways: as a turnkey plant your company owns, or as a leased plant that Wikota owns, delivers, and maintains while you produce. Either way, the result is the same: skid-mounted membrane and pressure swing adsorption (PSA) trains that can upgrade crude helium to up to 5N (99.999%) purity, mobilized and commissioned at your site.

This guide explains how helium purification works, how to decide between owning and leasing, and what an integrated EPC and fabrication partner changes about schedule and risk.

Quick Answer: Should You Lease or Buy a Helium Purification Plant?

Lease if you want to start producing helium without a large up-front capital outlay, need to reach production quickly, or are still proving out how much your field will produce. Buy a turnkey plant if you want the asset on your balance sheet, have a well-defined long-life reservoir, and prefer to own and operate the equipment yourself. Wikota builds both, so the decision can follow your financial and production goals rather than the vendor’s preference.

What Is a Helium Purification Plant?

Helium is rarely produced on its own. It typically comes out of the ground mixed with nitrogen, methane and heavier hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and water. That raw mixture, called crude helium, has little commercial value until it is cleaned up. A purification plant (sometimes called a helium upgrading plant) is the processing system that separates those contaminants out.

Wikota’s helium purification plants combine three stages:

  1. Feed conditioning: inlet separation and dehydration remove liquids and moisture before the gas reaches the separation equipment.
  2. Membrane separation: membranes perform bulk removal of nitrogen, hydrocarbons, and CO₂, concentrating the helium stream.
  3. PSA polishing: pressure swing adsorption units strip the remaining impurities to reach final product purity of up to 5N (99.999%).

Online analyzers and automated controls are available to monitor purity in real time, so operators can verify product quality continuously rather than relying on periodic samples.

Why Lease a Helium Purification Plant?

Leasing lets you produce helium without the capital burden of a turnkey plant. Wikota owns and delivers the equipment, and you focus on production. The main advantages:

  • Preserve capital. A large capital expenditure becomes a predictable operating cost, freeing funds for drilling, gathering, or other development.
  • Reach production faster. Shop-built modules mobilize in months, not years.
  • Reduce risk. Wikota carries the engineering, build, and performance risk of the plant.
  • Scale with your field. Capacity and lease terms can flex as production data comes in, so you are not locked into a plant sized on early estimates.

When a Turnkey Plant Makes More Sense

Ownership is often the better path when reserves are well characterized, the project has a long expected life, and the operator has the capital and in-house team to run the facility. With a turnkey plant, Wikota handles engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning, then hands over a complete, operating facility along with closeout documentation.

How Integrated EPC and In-House Fabrication Reduce Schedule Risk

Many helium projects involve separate firms for engineering, fabrication, and field construction, which creates handoffs, schedule gaps, and finger-pointing when something goes wrong. Wikota keeps those disciplines under one roof through its [Core EPC Services] (link: /services/core-epc-services/):

  • In-house civil, mechanical, electrical, and process capabilities, with electrical scope supported by sister company [Wikota Electrical Services] (link: wikotaes.com).
  • A dedicated fabrication facility in Brookshire, Texas operated by Wikota Fab Solutions, where skids and piping are built under controlled shop conditions.
  • Quality systems built into fabrication, including AWS D1.1-compliant welding, CWI-certified inspection, NDT-certified personnel, and hydrostatic testing procedures. Learn more about our Fabrication.

Building in the shop instead of the field minimizes field welding, limits cost escalation, and shortens delivery times. It also means much of the quality control happens before equipment ever reaches your lease. Mobilize and Deploy: From Fabrication Shop to Your Site

Wikota’s helium plants are designed to move. Each system is packaged for transport and fast installation:

  • Skid-mounted and transportable: modular packages sized for road transport.
  • Rapid installation: set, tie in, and commission with minimal field work, supported by our Construction & Site Management team.
  • Gathering lines: connect multiple well sites to a central processing plant.
  • Permitting assistance: siting and regulatory support to help keep the project moving.

Installation and commissioning services are available for both leased and turnkey plants.

execution. Decisions do not sit in a queue behind layers of account management.

  • Experience: more than 80 years of combined engineering, design, and construction expertise across the leadership team.
  • Efficiency: high-quality engineering, efficient procurement through our Engineering & Procurement team, in-house fabrication, and rapid construction times.
  • Safety: zero incidents and zero recordables in company history.

Frequently Asked Questions About Helium Purification Plants

Wikota’s plants can upgrade crude helium to up to 5N, or 99.999% purity, using a combination of membrane separation and pressure swing adsorption.

The plant removes nitrogen (N₂), hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide (CO₂), and moisture. Inlet separation and dehydration handle liquids and water, membranes handle bulk separation, and PSA units polish the gas to final purity.

Under a lease, Wikota owns and delivers the plant and carries the engineering, build, and performance risk. You pay a predictable operating lease instead of funding the full capital cost, and capacity and terms can be adjusted as your field develops.

Because Wikota’s plants are built as shop-fabricated modules, they mobilize in months rather than years. Exact timing depends on plant size, site conditions, and permitting. Can one plant process helium from multiple wells?

Yes. Wikota can design and build gathering lines that connect multiple well sites to a central processing plant.

Yes. Wikota provides permitting assistance, including siting and regulatory support, as part of its helium plant services. Early planning support is also available through our Consultation & Planning team.
